You do know that Shimano don't mean a thing until at least LX, XT, and XTR.
And let's call these what they are "mountain style bikes". None of them are
mountain worthy or would not bust on the first 12 foot verticle drop!
Mountain STYLE bikes....the looks - none of the function!

But then you alsways get exactly what you pay for......why there is not one
half decent bike in the lot!

d00d, you never know how much those bikes can withstand...
I occasionally leave my Trek 4500 Al bike at home and take old CCM
NorthRidge (well, I put all Shimano XT parts on it after all original stuff
broke in first two years...). Frame in that bike is rock solid (aluminum
too) and front "shock" (never bothered to replace it) still works. hehehe

Well I have an old clunker too, not CCM but a now bankrupt Canadian bike
maker.
I bought a a set of Rock Shox - if that dates it - the only way to get
shocks on a bike at that time.
I swear it is still a good bike - all 37lbs of it! Fast too. Great for
training runs, especially uphill - since it is so heavy.
But I would never ride it anywhere where my life and limbs were dependant on
that piece of bicycle technology.
And I doubt that frame would break, though the dropouts are rather lame,
it's the other components, it's lack of nimble percision that I risk on more
challenging sections of trecherous trail.

Yes, you can replace every single part of a bike, excet the frame, and you
will have a great bike, with a shity frame.
And with good conponenets, you might notice it is not aligned, that the
frame is offset, that is why no amount of gear adjustment ever got things
smooth. You know shit like that comes up.

And it really comes down to what you want to do with the bike. If ou are
just going to ride it around, any bike will do, if you commute you may
wantmore comfort, more upright posture, but if you montain bike, you are
talking off road - trails - and you should not ride shit in those
conditions. Even if you are a good rider. Don't need the pain.
